Now Apple has introduced the MacBook Neo, a much cheaper MacBook aimed at students and budget buyers. That means the Neo is not only competing with Chromebooks and affordable Windows laptops, but it’s also going head-to-head with the MacBook Air.

Why the MacBook Neo’s Price Is So Attractive

The difference in price makes a strong case for the MacBook Neo.

Compared with the discounted M4 MacBook Air, the Neo is about $300 cheaper (roughly ₹27,000). Compared with the M5 MacBook Air, the gap increases to about $500 (around ₹45,000).

Interestingly, the price difference between the M4 Air and the newer M5 Air is only about $200 (₹18,000).

The MacBook Neo runs on Apple’s A18 Pro processor and comes with 8GB of unified memory.

What Features Are Missing on the MacBook Neo

The base model doesn’t include Touch ID. To get it, you must upgrade to the 512GB storage version.

Basic Touchpad

The Neo uses a standard mechanical trackpad instead of the Force Touch haptic trackpad found on the MacBook Air.

Slower Ports

Instead of Thunderbolt 4 ports, the Neo includes basic USB-C ports with slower speeds.

It also lacks MagSafe charging, meaning you must charge the laptop using one of its USB-C ports.

Many MacBook users appreciate MagSafe because the magnetic connector easily detaches if someone accidentally pulls the cable.

Display and Webcam

One pleasant surprise is the 13-inch display on the MacBook Neo.

Earlier rumors suggested Apple might include a smaller 12-inch screen to reduce costs, but the company kept a fairly large display. It features a Liquid Retina panel with 2408×1506 resolution, which should still look sharp for everyday use.

The webcam supports 1080p video, similar to the MacBook Air, but it does not include Center Stage, which automatically keeps you centered during video calls.

The Neo’s display also lacks True Tone technology, which adjusts screen color based on surrounding lighting. Most users probably won’t notice this difference.

The Biggest Drawback: 8GB RAM

For many buyers, the biggest concern will be memory.

The MacBook Neo comes with 8GB RAM, and there’s no option to upgrade it.

While that’s enough for basic tasks, people who multitask heavily or run demanding apps may find it limiting.

Apple does offer RAM upgrades on the MacBook Air, but they are expensive. Moving from 16GB to 24GB RAM on the Air costs $200 (about ₹18,000).
