Apple Supercharges Photo Editing in Apple iOS 27 With Powerful AI Tools

Apple is taking photo editing to a whole new level with Apple iOS 27, introducing a suite of AI-powered tools that can fix common photography mistakes, expand images beyond their original frame, remove unwanted objects, and even change the perspective of photos after they have been captured.

Announced during Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote, the new Apple Intelligence features will be available across Apple iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, bringing advanced editing capabilities directly into the Photos app. Many of these features were previously only available through professional editing software or third-party applications.

Apple Brings Advanced AI Editing to Photos

As competition in AI-powered image editing continues to grow, Apple is now introducing tools that rival offerings from Google, Samsung, and Adobe. The company is focusing on making photo enhancement easier for everyday users without requiring complex editing skills.

The latest update introduces four major features: Extend, Spatial Reframing, Cleanup, and enhanced Image Playground editing.

Extend Can Recover Poorly Framed Photos

One of the most impressive additions is a new tool called Extend, which allows users to expand a photo beyond its original boundaries.

Rather than cropping away parts of an image, Extend uses artificial intelligence to generate entirely new content around the edges of a photo. This can be particularly useful when a picture feels too tightly framed or when users want additional space around a subject.

For example, a vacation photo that cuts off part of a famous landmark can be expanded to include more scenery. Portraits can also be widened to reveal more background details, making them better suited for wallpapers, social media posts, or widescreen displays.

While results may vary depending on image complexity, Extend aims to solve one of the most common frustrations smartphone photographers face.

Spatial Reframing Changes Perspective After Capture

Apple is also introducing Spatial Reframing, a feature that goes beyond traditional cropping.

Unlike a standard crop that simply removes portions of an image, Spatial Reframing uses AI-generated content to alter the apparent perspective of a photo. This allows users to adjust composition and viewing angles after a picture has already been taken.

The feature preserves the main subject while intelligently creating additional visual elements needed to support the new perspective.

Although the technology can sometimes produce inconsistencies—particularly with facial details—it offers users an entirely new way to improve photographs that may not have been perfectly composed initially.

Cleanup Gets Smarter and More Accurate

Apple’s existing Cleanup tool has received a major upgrade in Apple iOS 27.

The feature is designed to remove unwanted people, objects, or distractions from images. While previous versions worked well for simple edits, more complicated scenes could occasionally leave visible artifacts or obvious signs of manipulation.

The new version significantly improves image reconstruction, allowing Cleanup to fill in removed areas with more natural-looking details.

Users can now choose between different AI processing modes:

• High Quality – Focuses on detailed reconstruction and better visual accuracy.
• Auto – Lets the system automatically select the best option.

Image Playground Evolves Beyond AI Art

Apple’s Image Playground is also receiving one of its biggest upgrades since launch.

Previously known primarily for generating stylized AI artwork, the feature can now edit existing photos using natural-language prompts.

Users can select an object within an image and ask Image Playground to modify, move, replace, or transform it. For instance, someone could add flowers to a garden photo or replace certain elements simply by describing the desired change.

Perhaps most notably, Apple is introducing “photorealistic image generation” to Image Playground for the first time. This represents a significant shift from the app’s earlier focus on illustrations, sketches, and animated styles.

The update gives Image Playground a more practical purpose by turning it into a genuine photo-editing assistant rather than just a creative image generator.

Apple Focuses on Improving Photos People Already Have

Unlike many AI tools that prioritize creating entirely new content, Apple’s latest approach focuses on enhancing photos users already care about.

Whether it’s removing a stranger from the background of a vacation picture, recovering a tightly cropped image, or improving composition after the fact, the new tools are designed to fix real-world photography issues.

This practical approach could make Apple Intelligence more valuable for everyday users, as most people spend significantly more time editing and sharing existing photos than generating AI-created images from scratch.

Availability

The new AI-powered photo editing features are currently available in the developer beta versions of Apple iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

Apple is expected to release public beta versions later this summer, with the full software rollout planned for fall 2026.
