Renault Brings Back the Duster to India: A Comeback Story in the Making
In a move that’s bound to excite SUV lovers across the country, French automaker Renault has officially reintroduced the iconic Duster brand in India. After a gap of a few years, the all-new Renault Duster is back—this time with a fresh design, modern features, and a renewed ambition to reclaim its place in one of India’s most competitive car segments.
A Familiar Name, A Fresh Start
For many Indian buyers, the Renault Duster isn’t just another SUV—it’s a name that once redefined the segment. First launched in 2012, it quickly became a favorite for its rugged appeal and practicality. However, production was halted in 2022, leaving a noticeable gap in Renault’s lineup.
Now, with its comeback, Renault is clearly aiming to revive that legacy while adapting to today’s market expectations.
Renault’s Bigger Game Plan
Speaking about the launch, Renault India’s Vice President (Sales & Marketing), Francisco Hidalgo, made it clear that the company is not just bringing back a model—it’s planning a larger comeback.
Renault currently has four cars in India: Kwid, Triber, Kiger, and now the new Duster. The goal is simple—regain lost market share and return to its earlier peak, when it held around 4% of the Indian passenger vehicle market back in 2016.
And the Renault Duster is just the beginning.
Taking on the Toughest Rivals
The mid-size SUV segment in India is more competitive than ever, and the new Renault Duster is stepping right into the heat. It will go head-to-head with popular models like:
- Maruti Grand Vitara
- Kia Seltos
- Hyundai Creta
- Tata Sierra
Each of these has a strong foothold, which means Renault will need to deliver not just on nostalgia, but also on performance, features, and value.
Pricing and Variants
Renault has launched the new Duster at a starting price of ₹10.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The SUV is available with both manual and automatic transmission options, catering to a wide range of buyers.
Deliveries have already begun across India, signaling Renault’s confidence in the product.
Hybrid Version Coming Soon
One of the most exciting updates is the upcoming strong hybrid variant, expected to launch during the festive season.
This version will feature:
- A 1.8-litre petrol engine
- A 1.4 kWh battery pack
- Capability to run up to 80% on electric mode in city conditions
Interestingly, Renault has already seen strong interest in this version. Around 40% of customers in metro cities opted for the hybrid during pre-bookings—an indicator of growing demand for fuel-efficient and eco-friendly vehicles.
In fact, the company has already allocated its entire hybrid production capacity for 2026, with bookings expected to reopen closer to Diwali.
Strong Localization, No Supply Worries
Despite ongoing global uncertainties, especially in West Asia, Renault says it hasn’t faced any major supply chain disruptions. Thanks to over 90% localization, the company is well-insulated from external shocks—something that could work in its favor in the long run.
Export Plans in the Pipeline
Renault isn’t limiting the new Duster to India alone. Once domestic demand is met, the company plans to export the SUV to international markets, further strengthening its global footprint.
The return of the Duster marks more than just a product launch—it signals Renault’s renewed commitment to the Indian market. With a strong brand recall, competitive pricing, and a future-ready hybrid option, the new Duster has the potential to shake up the segment once again.
The big question now is: can it recreate the magic it once had?
For Indian car buyers, the answer might just lie in that first test drive.
